The Worshipful Company of Information Technologists (WCIT) celebrated the grant of its Royal Charter at St Paul's Cathedral in London on Thursday, 17th June 2010. The body, which is the City of London's 100th livery company, was established in 1985 and the grant recognises its contribution to charities and education.
Livery companies in the City of London have an eight hundred year history of education and supporting charitable causes. Although, the Information Technologists' company is relatively new, it has been very active in the last twenty-five years, with such projects as the Hammersmith Academy.
The livery company has 750 members drawn from the IT profession. Its membership includes such prominent figures as Bill Gates (Microsoft's Former CEO), Vint Cerf (Pioneer of the Internet Protocol) and Sir Tim Berners-Lee (Creator of the Web). Its members devote their time, experience and finances to support charitable and education causes, often linked to information technology.
