University of Plymouth Awards IAP Prize for 2008

I am pleased to report that John Thompson has been awarded The Institution of Analysts and Programmers 2008 Prize at the University of Plymouth. He graduated on 24th September 2008 on The Hoe in Plymouth.

The prize is awarded to the best software development project completed during the academic year in question at the university.

This is the first time that the Institution has awarded an undergraduate prize nationally, so it is a special honour to both John Thompson and to the University of Plymouth.

I have little doubt that John Thompson’s award is well deserved. As part of the decision process, I reviewed his project and found it to be of an exceptional calibre and truly deserving of the Institution’s prize.

I believe it also reflects the calibre of teaching at the University of Plymouth. The School of Computing, Communications and Electronics has a well-deserved reputation for producing very employable graduates.

I was asked by The Institution of Analysts and Programmers (IAP) if I could help them, as a Fellow of the Institution, to establish the prize at the university during the course of last year. Mike Ryan, the Director General of the IAP, was aware that Revell Research Systems had established a prize at the university in 2006 and asked if I could help them pilot their new national prize.

I’ve worked closely behind the scenes with the university’s staff to put in place the necessary assessment framework this year, so meeting John on the university’s campus during the Summer followed by the actual ceremony in September was a nice conclusion to the process for me.
