Incoming BCS President Predicts IT Skills Shortage

I think that the incoming president of The British Computer Society (BCS), Professor Nigel Shadbolt, is right to highlight the fact that demand for IT graduates is rising at a time that supply is falling.

Infinity!

We've recently started porting our large .NET class libraries from .NET 1.1 to .NET 2.0, which has to date been a fairly smooth process. We've also been revising and enhancing classes as we go and I stumbled across a rather nasty catch during this process.

Technical Documentation

I am becoming increasingly frustrated by the lack of technical documentation produced by software producers, particularly concerning the use of the file system and registry.

On Being Upgraded

I'm very used to upgrading software and hardware, but much less experienced about personally being upgraded!

Home PC Users

I feel sorry for home (private) users of PCs. They buy a machine that probably doesn't cost much more than any other commodity "white goods" item that they might purchase, but it often later proves to be a complete nightmare to run.

MS06-055 Released

Further to my blog yesterday about the VML Exploit in Internet Explorer, Microsoft have released overnight (UK time) an out-of-band patch. Early news of the release was reported by Microsoft's Craig Gehre on the Microsoft Security Response Center Blog.

Microsoft clearly consider this vulnerability to be serious, since they rarely issue patches outside the normal monthly cycle.

Microsoft are taking advantage of the need to release MS06-055 by re-releasing MS06-049, which apparently needs some alterations.

Flaw in Internet Explorer (VML Exploit)

Sunbelt Software have recently (21st September 2006) discovered a serious flaw in Internet Explorer that potentially allows vulnerable machines to be completely compromised.

Moving On from Win2K and Being Intelligently Agile

I've recently noticed that the .NET Framework Version 3.0 (which is currently in the late beta stage) is unlikely to run on anything earlier than Windows XP SP2. The likely consequence of this is that some software developed over the next couple of years will not run on Windows 2000. This is probably early notice to business to move on from Windows 2000.
